Indonesia Lawmaker Calls for Stronger Digital Protection for Female Politicians
Indonesia’s House of Representatives member Rio A. J. Dondokambey, speaking for the Inter‑Parliamentary Cooperation Body, urged stronger responsibility from digital platforms to protect women active in politics. He warned that gender‑based online harassment, disinformation and intimidation often turn policy debate into personal attacks on appearance, family role and gender identity, silencing female leaders and weakening democratic representation.
Dondokambey called for firmer international commitments, tighter regulation and platform accountability, stating: “This is not just a communication issue, it is a democracy issue… when online harassment silences women leaders, democracy loses voice, perspective, and representation.” He also highlighted Indonesia’s move toward a safer digital ecosystem, greater transparency and enhanced digital literacy and ethics education to build public awareness of misinformation risks.
