Indonesia and Australia lead regional security meeting in Jakarta

Indonesia and Australia co-chaired the 7th Sub-Regional Meeting on Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Security (SRM) in Jakarta to strengthen regional coordination against interconnected security threats. The meeting included representatives from eight nations: Indonesia, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

Key discussions focused on combating terrorism, violent extremism, human trafficking, people smuggling, and cybercrime. Officials specifically addressed the rise of online scam centers in countries like Myanmar and Cambodia, noting that identifying victims remains a significant challenge. To combat these issues, participants emphasized the need for improved intelligence sharing, coordinated investigations, and enhanced victim protection.

Delegates also highlighted emerging risks posed by the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting criminal activities, propaganda, and extremism. Additional topics included maritime security, irregular migration, and the protection of critical infrastructure. Rather than applying direct pressure to countries hosting scam activities, Indonesia and Australia are currently prioritizing persuasive communication and information exchange to find collaborative solutions.
