Indonesia malls erect high security fences amid protest fears

Shopping centres in Jakarta and Surabaya have installed 2.5‑3 metre high metal fences, prompting speculation that the measures anticipate large‑scale demonstrations. The fences were put up at prominent malls such as Kota Kasablanka, Gandaria City, Pakuwon Mall and Tunjungan Plaza.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said he will request the removal of the barriers and confirmed that local authorities are coordinating with the Indonesian National Police and the Armed Forces to maintain city security. Alphonzus Widjaja, chair of the Indonesian Shopping Centre Management Association, described the fences as a routine safety precaution for premises located on major public thoroughfares.

Members of the House’s Commission I, including Deputy Chair Dave Laksono, urged the public to remain calm and avoid premature conclusions, noting that no official intelligence indicates an elevated threat ahead of the nation’s 81st Independence Day celebrations.
