Indonesia manages energy security amid wildfires and transition needs

Indonesia is managing several critical energy and resource developments alongside environmental challenges. In West Papua, the Tangguh LNG facility has entered high alert (Siaga 1) as wildfires approach within 600 meters of the site. While gas shipments from the three LNG trains remain normal, emergency response meetings involving the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and SKK Migas are scheduled to ensure operational safety.

In Jambi, forest fires near PetroChina's Jabung facility distribution pipelines have been successfully extinguished, according to SKK Migas Head Djoko Siswanto. However, officials remain concerned about ongoing fires in Bintuni and Kalimantan.

In the mining sector, PT Freeport Indonesia's Grasberg mine in Central Papua continues to serve as a global copper barometer. Its transition to underground mining is vital for international markets, as operational disruptions at the site can directly impact global commodity prices.

Regarding the energy transition, MPR Vice Chairman Eddy Soeparno noted that Indonesia requires approximately US$ 230 billion in investment to facilitate its transition, including the development of 70 GW of new power plants and solar energy projects. He emphasized that attracting private and international investment will require improved legal certainty, policy consistency, and streamlined licensing processes.

Additionally, business proposals have emerged regarding a trade-in scheme to accelerate the transition from gasoline motorcycles to electric vehicles to reduce fuel subsidies.
