Indonesia manages Jakarta unrest and escalating forest fires

Indonesia is facing dual challenges involving civil unrest in Jakarta and escalating forest fires. Following riots in Jakarta on August 27, the mass organization GRIB Jaya has denied involvement in violence, including the death of a mirror seller in Pejompongan. The organization clarified that its chairperson, Rosario de Marshal, was present only to monitor the security situation and did not instruct members to participate in protests. Additionally, authorities have debunked claims that Kopassus 'Red Beret' troops were deployed to secure the protests, identifying such footage as part of a routine military ceremony.

In the context of law enforcement, Jakarta Metro Police arrested an Instagram administrator, AFA, for allegedly circulating instructions on manufacturing Molotov cocktails and using provocative language.

Simultaneously, the Indonesian Forestry Ministry is intensifying its response to widespread forest and land fires. With rainfall delayed until October, Minister Raja Juli Antoni has designated September as a critical period, deploying 1,000 additional personnel and utilizing weather modification operations, such as cloud seeding, to combat the fires. Nearly 286,000 hectares of land have been scorched across the country since the beginning of 2026.
