Indonesia marks 81st Hari Bhakti Postel with focus on 5G and digital sovereignty

Indonesia marked the 81st Hari Bhakti Postel (Post and Telecommunications Service Day) in Bandung, commemorating the 1945 takeover of postal and telegraph services from Japanese administration. During the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Angga Raka Prabowo emphasized that modern national sovereignty now depends on mastering and utilizing digital technology and strategic telecommunications infrastructure.

With digital connectivity coverage in Indonesia exceeding 90%, the government is shifting focus toward service quality and the acceleration of 5G technology. Plans include utilizing the 700 MHz frequency to eliminate blank spots via 4G and the 2,600 MHz frequency to enhance 5G quality.

Additionally, new regulations from the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Circular Letter No. 4/2026) mandate that unused internet data quotas must not expire for both prepaid and postpaid services. Telecommunications operators are currently working on technical solutions, such as billing system adjustments and rollover mechanisms, to comply with this protection for consumers.
