Indonesia pushes mineral downstreaming and production targets
Indonesia is intensifying its focus on mineral downstreaming to transform raw commodities into high-value industrial drivers. The mining holding company MIND ID and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM) are working to ensure mineral resources create domestic economic value, jobs, and technological transfer through the processing of commodities like bauxite and nickel.
In the mineral and coal subsector, the government is pushing for production that prioritizes community welfare and regional economic growth. As of August 2026, non-tax state revenue (PNBP) from this sector reached Rp108.13 trillion, moving toward a yearly target of Rp133.9 trillion.
PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) has reported that its Manyar smelter in Gresik has resumed operations following a landslide at the Grasberg Block Cave in September 2025. Despite operating at approximately 65% of normal capacity due to previous material landslides, PTFI targets a 2026 gold production of 21 tons (700,000 ounces) and 800 million pounds of copper. Production capacity is expected to increase gradually as mining areas recover.
