Mentawai resident faces prosecution for unlicensed Starlink services
The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has responded to the legal case of Yogi Gilang Arya Setia, a resident of Mentawai who is facing prosecution for providing Starlink internet services without a permit.
Minister Meutya Hafid stated that while the ministry respects the ongoing legal process, the situation must be viewed from two perspectives: the necessity of following licensing regulations and the urgent community need for better internet access. Although the Sikakap area in Mentawai has 4G coverage, the lack of fiber optic infrastructure and reliance on a single operator results in poor service quality.
Rather than focusing solely on criminal penalties, Komdigi aims to prioritize guidance and coaching (pembinaan). The ministry intends to find solutions such as helping residents obtain proper permits or connecting them with licensed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to act as official resellers, ensuring connectivity is provided within a legal framework.
