Indonesia Minister of Religion promotes technology and religious diplomacy

During the 2026 Santri Day celebrations at Istiqlal Mosque, Indonesia’s Minister of Religion, Nasaruddin Umar, called for Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) to integrate modern science and technology, including artificial intelligence, with traditional religious studies. He expressed a vision for pesantren to revive the intellectual tradition of the Baitul Hikmah, fostering an environment where students can become scientists, doctors, and engineers while maintaining their religious identity.

Minister Umar also emphasized the importance of religious diplomacy as a strategic tool for addressing global humanitarian issues. He noted that Indonesia’s moderate and inclusive religious landscape serves as a model for international peace and social harmony. Additionally, he urged political science academics to strengthen public political literacy through scientific research and publications rather than mere political campaigning.

Regarding student welfare, the Minister stressed that protecting santri from violence, bullying, and harassment must be a priority in pesantren education. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the quality of these institutions through the implementation of Law Number 18 of 2019, which covers educational quality, teacher competence, and economic independence for pesantren.
