Indonesia Ministry of Communication monitors mobile number portability legal challenge

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) has announced its readiness to comply with any future rulings from the Constitutional Court regarding mobile number portability (MNP). The ministry is closely monitoring a judicial review concerning telecommunications regulations.

The legal challenge, filed by Bisyron Wahyudi, seeks to test several articles within the Telecommunications Law (Law No. 36 of 1999, as amended by the Job Creation Law). The petitioner argues that current laws lack effective legal guarantees for users to retain their mobile numbers when switching between service operators. The absence of MNP mechanisms is cited as a potential detriment to consumer rights in the digital era, as changing numbers necessitates updating various accounts and business materials.

Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid stated that the government is prepared to draft new regulations if required to fulfill the Constitutional Court’s decision once the legal process is complete.
