Indonesia Ministry of Communication to oversee internet quota protections

The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) has announced its readiness to oversee the implementation of a Constitutional Court ruling regarding internet data quotas. The ruling mandates that telecommunications providers must offer service options that ensure remaining internet quotas stay active and usable, protecting them as a consumer right.

Deputy Minister Nezar Patria stated that the ministry is coordinating with various stakeholders to ensure mobile operators comply with the legal decision. The court's decision emphasizes that telecommunication tariffs must reflect the actual value received by users, meaning paid-for but unused data should be legally protected for both prepaid and postpaid services.

Telecommunications observer Kamilov Sagala noted that while the ruling is final and binding, the government's circular (SE) may act merely as a temporary measure rather than a comprehensive guarantee. He argued that since customers purchase specific volumes of data, the expiration of an active period should not result in the loss of the remaining paid quota.
