Indonesia Ministry of Health reports 84.8% dental caries rate in children
The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has reported that 84.8% of children aged 5 to 9 years suffer from dental caries, according to the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI).
Acting Director General of Disease Prevention, Andi Saguni, noted that 56.9% of the population aged three and older experience oral health issues. However, only 11.2% of those affected seek medical treatment. Saguni emphasized the need to shift focus from merely treating existing problems to proactive prevention and early detection.
To address these challenges, the Ministry is promoting the theme ‘Strong Teeth, Healthy Smile, Great Indonesia’ for the 2026 National Dental Health Day. The initiative encourages regular check-ups and consistent oral hygiene habits, particularly in children, to establish a foundation for lifelong health.
