Indonesia Ministry of Health targets high rates of dental decay in children

The Indonesian Ministry of Health and Pepsodent have launched the 2026 National Dental Health Month (BKGN) to improve access to oral health education and services. This year’s initiative focuses on the importance of maintaining the oral microbiome balance.

Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono reported that dental examinations have been integrated into the government’s Free Health Check program, which should be utilized by all school-aged children. However, he noted a concerning trend: approximately 40% of school children examined through the program suffer from dental caries (cavities).

Health officials are emphasizing preventive and promotive measures rather than waiting for pain to occur. They recommend routine dental check-ups every six months and suggest utilizing school health units (UKS) to help students recognize early signs of dental issues.
