Indonesia Ministry of Marine Affairs prepares for 2027 fishing village expansion
The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is preparing for the 2027 expansion of the Merah Putih Fishing Village (KNMP) program. To support this, 3,500 participants from 37 provinces have been trained to conduct surveys for thousands of potential development sites. The survey process, which includes data verification and community interviews, is scheduled to continue through mid-December 2026 to ensure locations meet the economic needs of local fishing communities.
Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono reported that 1,269 fishing villages are currently under construction as part of a broader government target. The administration aims to have 1,360 villages established by December 2026, with 100 already operational. This flagship program under President Prabowo Subianto seeks to strengthen coastal economies by improving production, processing, logistics, and marketing capabilities for small-scale fishermen.
