Indonesia Ministry of Marine Affairs regulates shrimp imports and boosts fisheries

Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has taken several actions to regulate the domestic seafood market and boost national production. In East Java, authorities seized 1,048 tons of imported shrimp from Canada, Argentina, and Ecuador. The seizure, conducted in Probolinggo, Pasuruan, and Lamongan, aims to protect local aquaculture farmers from illegal or non-compliant imports that threaten their competitiveness.

Separately, the KKP is deploying 33 Indonesian-flagged vessels to the Arafura Sea to increase national capture fisheries production. This initiative is part of a technical cooperation agreement between Indonesia and China. The project is expected to involve 669 workers and produce approximately 9,500 tons of fish annually, following government-set quotas. Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono emphasized that the cooperation should modernize fleets and strengthen the national fishery supply chain while ensuring full traceability of all caught fish.
