Indonesia mobile internet speeds rise 43.4% but trail ASEAN neighbors

Indonesia’s mobile internet download speeds increased by 43.4% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026, according to data from Ookla. The median download speed reached 52.01 Mbps, up from 36.27 Mbps during the same period the previous year.

Despite this growth, Indonesia’s connectivity remains behind several Southeast Asian neighbors. Singapore recorded the highest median mobile download speed at 151.89 Mbps, followed by Malaysia at 141.95 Mbps, Vietnam at 126.71 Mbps, and Thailand at 110.78 Mbps. Indonesia’s speed of 52.01 Mbps is slightly higher than the Philippines (50.77 Mbps) and Laos (37.89 Mbps).

Affandy Johan, a telecom industry analyst at Ookla, noted that while the growth indicates the Indonesian network is moving in the right direction, challenges remain. Key obstacles to improving connectivity include the country’s archipelagic geography and limitations in frequency spectrum availability.
