Indonesia moves to revamp cooperative and consumer protection legislation

Indonesia is preparing a new Cooperatives Bill to replace the 1992 law, according to Cooperatives Minister Ferry Juliantono. The draft aims to modernise the sector, create a public‑service agency for cooperative training, expand cooperatives into strategic industries such as oil‑field management, and revive a cooperative bank.

At the same time, the Ministry of Trade is pushing a revision of the 1999 Consumer Protection Law. Director‑General Moga Simatupang said the draft, still being refined, will address vulnerable groups, misleading advertising and e‑commerce scams, and is expected to be debated in parliament this year. Trade Minister Budi Santoso highlighted the need to update the law after nearly three decades of rapid market change.
