Indonesia MSMEs face halal certification hurdles and new legal aid
Small business owners in Indonesia are facing challenges regarding mandatory halal certification requirements. One micro-entrepreneur, Wahyu Triana Sari, has filed a judicial review with the Constitutional Court. The petition does not oppose halal certification itself but seeks simpler procedures, adequate facilitation, and fair timelines for micro and small enterprises. The petitioner cited difficulties including a lack of government socialization, complex administrative requirements such as obtaining a Business Identification Number (NIB) through the OSS system, and limited quotas for free certification programs.
In response to administrative hurdles, the Palembang District Attorney's Office has introduced the JAGARA PUSAKA program. This initiative provides legal assistance and free halal certification services specifically for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Palembang. The program aims to help entrepreneurs navigate legalities, including NIB registration and risk-based business licensing, to ensure they meet regulatory standards without incurring extra costs.
