Indonesia: Multiple corruption and law enforcement investigations underway
Indonesia is facing several high-profile legal and corruption investigations. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating alleged corruption in the customs sector involving PT Djarum, with estimated state losses reaching trillions of rupiah. Investigators have searched PT Djarum headquarters and the Kudus Customs Office to probe potential bribery related to cigarette excise stamps.
In a separate corruption case, the KPK is questioning witnesses, including the sibling of the former Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), regarding the alleged misuse of disaster ready-to-use funds (DSP). Five suspects have already been named in the BNPB case.
Regarding law enforcement and human rights, the Ombudsman of Indonesia has called for police to ensure that recent raids on an Islamic boarding school in Sukoharjo were conducted legally and ethically, following concerns over the treatment of residents. Additionally, a legislator has urged police to investigate the alleged detention of ten prospective domestic workers in Surabaya to prevent potential human trafficking.
