Indonesia nickel industry faces growth and environmental scrutiny

Indonesia’s expanding nickel industry is facing a dual reality of corporate growth and local environmental challenges. The company is focusing its 2026 strategy on operational efficiency, green transformation, and workplace safety to maintain competitiveness.

Simultaneously, the reliance on captive coal plants to power nickel smelting operations is impacting local communities. In Central Sulawesi, residents near the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) report issues with noise, vibrations, and coal ash. In North Maluku, operations by Harita Nickel have led to the relocation of hundreds of families from villages like Kawasi on Obi Island. While companies state that new settlements are equipped with essential utilities, environmental advocates and local residents highlight the disruption to livelihoods and the environmental burden placed on these regions.
