Indonesia officials assess fire response after urban blaze in Sorong and forest fires in Aceh West

In Sorong, West Papua, the chair of the city council, John Lewerisa, inspected the aftermath of a blaze on Jalan Misool that destroyed nine houses and school supplies. He urged the local government to evaluate the fire‑department’s standard operating procedures, ensure 24‑hour readiness of fire trucks, and install hydrants in densely populated neighborhoods.

In Aceh West, the regional disaster agency reported that forest and land fires have burned about 12.5 hectares across four districts. Limited water sources, strong winds and ongoing investigations into the causes hampered suppression efforts. Teams from BPBD, fire stations, the military, police and local volunteers deployed trucks, pumps and portable equipment to contain the flames.

Both incidents have prompted Indonesian authorities to review emergency response capabilities and encourage community cooperation to prevent further fire damage.
