Indonesia overtakes Thailand as top vehicle supplier to Vietnam

Vietnam’s completely built-up vehicle imports rose 8.1 percent in July compared to the previous month, reaching a total value of US$597.25 million. This represents a 40.8 percent increase in value compared to the same period last year, according to Vietnam Customs.

Indonesia has overtaken Thailand as Vietnam’s primary source of imported vehicles. In July, Indonesia supplied 12,137 units, a 96.7 percent surge year-on-year. This growth is largely attributed to the rising popularity of small MPVs and urban SUVs, such as the Mitsubishi Xpander, Toyota Veloz, Hyundai Stargazer, and Suzuki XL7.

Thailand ranked second in July with 9,094 vehicles, marking a 36.57 percent increase year-on-year. While Thailand remains a significant supplier of pickup trucks and midsize SUVs, its growth rate has trailed Indonesia’s recent surge. China ranked third, supplying 5,091 vehicles worth $168.2 million; although Chinese imports fell compared to June, they remained 16.6 percent higher than the previous year.
