Indonesia accelerates energy transition via solar, gasification, and carbon capture projects
Indonesia is advancing several strategic energy initiatives aimed at decarbonization and energy independence. President Prabowo Subianto recently inaugurated the first phase of a 100 GWp solar power plant program, starting with 5.3 GWp capacity across six provinces. This massive solar program is projected to require approximately Rp1,140 trillion in investment, potentially create 5.52 million jobs, and generate annual savings of up to Rp73.9 trillion.
In the industrial sector, a coal gasification project in East Kalimantan has commenced groundbreaking. This project aims to produce 2 million tons of methanol annually, which is expected to save Rp7.1 trillion in foreign exchange each year. Additionally, the government is exploring Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS/CCUS) technologies, leveraging Indonesia's geological potential of 500 Gigatons in saline aquifers and 4 Gigatons in depleted oil and gas reservoirs.
Other developments include the testing of 3 kg Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) cylinders for limited public use as an alternative to LPG, and the commencement of waste-to-energy operations in Palembang. Furthermore, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has been allocated a budget of Rp27.37 trillion for 2027, a 26.4% increase from 2026, to support strategic infrastructure and energy programs.
