Prabowo Subianto leads Kalimantan forest fire response efforts

President Prabowo Subianto traveled to Kalimantan on August 22, 2026, to personally inspect and lead response efforts against widespread forest and land fires. During his visit to West Kalimantan, the President conducted an aerial patrol via helicopter to monitor hotspots and held a coordination meeting with various government agencies, including the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

Satellite data reported 198 high-confidence hotspots in West Kalimantan within a 24-hour period. In West Kalimantan alone, fire damage has reached 38,310.86 hectares between January and August 2026, with Ketapang Regency recording the highest damage at 12,443 hectares. Due to the severity of the situation, the provincial government has declared a Smoke Disaster Emergency Alert status.

To ensure a rapid and integrated response, President Prabowo implemented a command strategy by assigning senior military and police leaders to oversee operations across four provinces. The TNI Commander and National Police Chief are leading efforts in West Kalimantan, while other high-ranking officials have been deployed to Central, South, and East Kalimantan. The President emphasized that all legal violations regarding environmental protection and land burning must be strictly prosecuted.
