Indonesia players return to European clubs after ASEAN Cup victory

Following Indonesia's victory at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, players Calvin Verdonk and Dean James have returned to their respective clubs in Europe. Indonesia secured the title after defeating Thailand in a penalty shootout (4-2), marking the senior team's first championship in 35 years.

Calvin Verdonk, a defender for Lille, stated that he has shifted his focus back to club duties, including upcoming matches against Le Havre in Ligue 1 and Arsenal in the Champions League. Verdonk noted that he made efforts to maintain his European sleep schedule while in Indonesia to facilitate a smoother transition back to his club routine.

Dean James, a defender for Go Ahead Eagles, described the stark contrast between the intense public attention received in Indonesia and the quieter life in the Netherlands. James, who scored a free kick and converted a penalty during the final, noted that while he was widely recognized in public in Indonesia, he can move more freely and anonymously in the Netherlands.
