Indonesia pledges support for Palestinian sovereignty at UN

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono addressed the 81st United Nations General Assembly, stating that Indonesia will continue to stand by the Palestinian people until an independent and sovereign Palestinian state is established through a two-state solution.

Sugiono characterized the situation in Gaza and the West Bank as a “test of conscience” and a significant challenge to the credibility of the international system. He argued that the ongoing violations of international law in these territories mirror a pre-1945 era, undermining the principles of the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Geneva Conventions.

Drawing on Indonesia’s own history of fighting against colonialism, the Foreign Minister emphasized that respect for sovereignty must be upheld and colonialism must end. He called for the strengthening of the multilateral system and urged international institutions to remain committed to the legal principles upon which they were founded.
