Indonesia postpones mandatory halal certification deadline to 2028

The Indonesian government has officially postponed the deadline for mandatory halal certification for various products and services from October 18, 2026, to October 17, 2028. This decision, announced by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, aims to provide more time for businesses to adapt and to strengthen the national halal ecosystem.

Minister of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Maman Abdurrahman stated that the extension considers the readiness of business actors and the financial burden certification imposes on small enterprises. The policy is a mandate of Law Number 33 of 2014, and the delay follows directives from President Prabowo Subianto to ensure the sustainability of MSMEs.

The revised timeline applies to food, beverages, slaughter products, and slaughtering services. For micro and small businesses, the obligation for these categories is extended to October 17, 2028. Other product groups, including natural medicines, non-prescription drugs, functional foods, cosmetics, chemical products, and genetically modified products, also have their transition periods adjusted to October 2028.
