Indonesia's poverty rate fell to 8.07 percent in March 2026, according to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS). This represents a decrease of 920,000 people compared to March 2025, bringing the total number of people living below the poverty line to 22.93 million.

The Government Communications Agency (Bakom RI) reported a long-term downward trend, noting that the poverty rate dropped from 10.14 percent in 2021 to 8.47 percent in 2025. During this same period, extreme poverty fell from 2.14 percent to 0.85 percent, and income inequality, measured by the Gini ratio, improved from 0.384 to 0.375.

To sustain these trends, the government is focusing on social protection, meeting basic needs, and economic empowerment. Key initiatives include integrated data-based social protection, the Wage Subsidy Assistance (BSU) program, and a national internship program for university graduates, which aimed to provide 150,000 placements in 2026. The government also utilizes the Human Capital Index as a development metric, with a 2025 target of 0.56.
