Indonesia poverty rates show decline in Java as BPS releases welfare data

Recent data from the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) indicates a significant shift in national poverty trends. Between September 2025 and March 2026, the poverty rate on the island of Java saw a notable decline, dropping from 7.81% to 7.60%. This 0.21 percentage point decrease represents the largest reduction among Indonesia's major islands during this period, a critical development given that Java accounts for approximately 52.42% of the nation's poor population.

In West Java, the BPS released the National Socio-Economic Single Data (DTSEN) to assist government planning. The data utilizes a decile system to rank household welfare based on various socio-economic characteristics, including housing conditions, access to drinking water, energy use, education, and health. Decile 1 represents the lowest relative welfare group. In West Java, the highest concentration of individuals in Decile 1 was recorded in Bogor Regency, with 396,680 individuals.
