Indonesia Ministry of Transportation strengthens safety and regulatory oversight
The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation is implementing several regulatory and economic measures across various transport sectors. Minister Dudy Purwagandhi has emphasized strengthening safety standards through increased operator supervision and mandatory assessments for public transport executives to ensure accountability.
In the land transport sector, the Directorate General of Land Transportation is monitoring Intercity Interprovincial (AKAP) bus services via the Terminal Online System. Data from January to October 2026 indicates that over 55% of arriving bus trips at Type A terminals showed indications of violations, primarily regarding route deviations.
Regarding digital platforms, the government is working to include online motorcycle taxis (ojol) under the public transportation category within the revised Traffic and Road Transport Law. This aims to clarify the rights and obligations of both drivers and operators. Simultaneously, discussions regarding the protection of digital platform workers are ongoing to address issues of flexibility and social security.
For air travel, the Ministry is preparing tax stimuli, specifically through Government-Borne Value Added Tax (PPN-DTP), to keep ticket prices affordable during the 2026/2027 Christmas and New Year holiday period. Additionally, new regulations regarding upper fare limits (TBA) are being finalized to manage airfare costs.
