Indonesia prepares alternative ports and ship inspections for 2026-2027 holiday season
The Indonesian government is implementing several measures to manage the anticipated surge in maritime travel during the 2026-2027 Christmas and New Year holidays. To alleviate congestion at the primary Ketapang-Gilimanuk crossing, authorities are preparing three alternative ports: Jangkar in Situbondo, Tanjungwangi in Banyuwangi, and Celukan Bawang in Buleleng, Bali.
Each alternative port is projected to accommodate up to 500 vehicles. To support this, 13 ferry vessels have been allocated, with eight assigned to Jangkar and five to Tanjungwangi. Officials are also upgrading port facilities, including lighting, toilets, and CCTV surveillance.
Simultaneously, the Ministry of Transportation is conducting seaworthiness inspections on 2,140 ships throughout November 2026. These inspections focus on safety equipment, fire extinguishers, evacuation routes, engine conditions, and navigation systems. A dedicated integrated command post is scheduled to operate from December 18, 2026, to January 6, 2027, to coordinate transport and monitor potential disruptions.
