Indonesia prepares for mandatory halal certification in 2026

The Indonesian government is preparing for the mandatory implementation of halal certification, which is set to take effect on October 18, 2026, in accordance with Law Number 33 of 2014 regarding Halal Product Assurance.

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, Pratikno, stated that the certification is intended to provide certainty for consumers and strengthen trust within the trading sector. The government is specifically focusing on facilitating certification for micro and small enterprises (UMK) to ensure they can comply without facing excessive economic burdens.

Ahmad Haikal Hasan, Head of the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH), emphasized that the mandate is not intended to restrict trade but to serve as an instrument for consumer protection and to increase product competitiveness. He assured that the policy would not disrupt international trade processes.

To ensure a smooth transition, the Presidential Staff Office is working to coordinate technical issues, including inspection agencies, system integration, and the alignment of HS codes, to prevent the mandate from hindering business activities.
