Koperasi Merah Putih program expands village distribution and economic roles
The Indonesian government is advancing the Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih (KDKMP) program, designed to strengthen village economies and streamline the distribution of subsidized goods. In Kudus, 90 cooperative units are ready for operation, equipped with infrastructure such as internet, electricity, and transport vehicles, pending the official appointment of managers.
Recent discussions have focused on the placement of KDKMP managers. The government clarified that assignments are determined using the Hungarian Bipartite Matchmaking Method, which balances domicile proximity with national needs, building readiness, and available quotas. This explanation follows social media scrutiny regarding managers being assigned far from their homes. Additionally, officials clarified that managers will not automatically hold BUMN (State-Owned Enterprise) employee status; instead, they will initially operate under PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara following a two-year training period.
The program aims to reduce food supply chain margins from 30–40 percent down to 5–10 percent by acting as a direct link between producers and consumers. Early indicators of success include South Sulawesi reporting 1.19 million transactions through August 2026. The initiative is supported by a Presidential Regulation on KDKMP governance and involves inter-agency cooperation between entities like Bulog and Agrinas.
