Indonesia probes alleged police bribe and foreign‑resident permit extortion

The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has called on the national police to investigate claims that a police officer paid Rp20 million to University of Bung Karno students to move a protest from the Presidential Palace to the DPR complex. DPR member Abdullah said the probe is needed to maintain public trust, stating “Polri must investigate to prove whether the allegation is true or not.”

Separately, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is examining accusations that officials at the Ngurah Rai and Denpasar immigration offices demanded extra money beyond official fees for processing foreign residence permits. KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo said investigators are reviewing testimony from two witnesses who say the illicit payments were requested to expedite visas, KITAS and KITAP permits. The probe follows a June operation that resulted in 17 arrests, including senior immigration officials, and allegations of Rp145.5 billion in illicit gains.
