Indonesia: Protests against pork restaurant spark intolerance debate
In Palu, Central Sulawesi Province, dozens of Muslim residents protested against Warung Ajik Tondo, a restaurant specializing in pork dishes. The incident has sparked a national debate in Indonesia regarding religious intolerance and the rights of minority-owned businesses to operate.
Following mediation meetings in July, several requirements were imposed on the eatery, including obtaining permission from 30 local households, removing pig imagery from signage, displaying a ‘non-halal’ label, and prohibiting the keeping of live pigs on the premises.
Bonar Tigor Naipospos, deputy chair of the Setara Institute for Democracy and Peace, noted that there are no national or local regulations requiring non-halal eateries to seek permission from a specific number of households. He emphasized that the government has a duty to protect business freedom and ensure minority rights are respected without the majority religion imposing its preferences.
