Indonesia pushes coconut and cocoa sectors to boost exports and processing

Indonesia is launching a long‑term plan to become a leading exporter of coconut‑based products. National Development Planning Minister Rachmat Pambudy said the 2025‑2045 Coconut Downstreaming Roadmap will raise financing, research, innovation and standards, expand processing capacity and improve supply chains. The country, the world’s second‑largest coconut producer, saw export earnings of US$2.48 billion last year.

At the same time, the government is reviving its cocoa industry. An export levy will fund replanting programmes, high‑quality seedlings and productivity improvements to cut reliance on imports. Indonesia’s eleven cocoa‑processing plants can handle more than 750,000 tonnes a year but operate at about 60 % capacity due to limited domestic beans. Recent measures aim to raise output, which reached roughly 200,000 tonnes in the 2024/25 season, and to increase processing utilisation.
