Indonesia Pushes for Skilled Workforce in Maritime Technology and Industry
Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Brian Yuliarto told a scientific forum at the Jakarta Maritime College that Indonesia needs world‑class maritime human resources who combine technical expertise with leadership, integrity and adaptability. He highlighted the strategic importance of the sea for the nation’s economy, food security, energy and defence, and called for graduates to become innovators and guardians of the environment through green‑shipping practices.
Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita announced the graduation of 2,369 vocational students from nine SMK‑SMAK and SMK‑SMTI schools, stressing that a skilled industrial workforce is essential for the country’s transformation into a manufacturing hub. He noted that the processing industry grew 5.04 % in Q1 2026, employing over 20 million people and contributing 82 % of exports. The minister urged graduates to uphold competence, honesty and professionalism as they enter the labour market.
