Indonesia pushes prosecution of former minister Nadiem Makarim over Chromebook graft

Two lawyers who represented former education minister Nadiem Makarim in the Chromebook procurement corruption trial were reported to the Indonesian Advocates Association (PERADI) for allegedly disrespecting the court during the sentencing hearing. The complaint, filed by anti‑corruption NGO Jamsaki, cites a comment by the lawyers that they perceived the judge as fearful and alleges violation of criminal procedure and professional ethics.

Separately, the Attorney General’s Office announced it will invoke Indonesia’s anti‑money‑laundering statute (TPPU) in the same case. Officials say the measure will broaden the investigation to trace assets linked to the alleged corrupt payments and work with the financial intelligence agency (PPATK) to recover state losses, underscoring a tougher stance on high‑profile graft.
