Indonesia ranks highest in global surveys on religious importance

International surveys highlight exceptionally high levels of religiosity in Indonesia. According to the seventh wave of the World Values Survey, 98 percent of Indonesian respondents stated that religion is very important in their lives. Additionally, 2022 data from the Pew Research Center indicated that 95 percent of the population reports praying every day, the highest figure in that study.

Greg Fealy of the Australian National University noted that while these figures demonstrate the dominance of religious belief, they measure the intensity of belief and practice rather than the specific application of Islamic values in governance. Findings from the Global Flourishing Study, conducted by Baylor University and Harvard University, also suggest that the perceived importance of religion remains high regardless of how frequently individuals attend religious services. For instance, among those attending services more than once a week, 96 percent view religion as important, compared to 93 percent of those who attend only a few times a year.
