Indonesia receives first aircraft carrier via Italian grant

The former Italian Navy aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi has arrived at Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta, marking a significant milestone in Indonesia's naval modernization efforts. The 180-meter vessel, which is being transferred to Indonesia as a grant from the Italian government, is expected to be officially renamed KRI Sriwijaya or KRI Gadjah Mada during a formal transfer scheduled for September 24.

Indonesian officials, including President Prabowo Subianto and Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali, have emphasized that the ship will serve as a versatile platform for non-combat missions. Key intended uses include disaster relief, humanitarian assistance, emergency logistics, and combating forest and peatland fires using helicopters and drones. The vessel has the capacity to accommodate up to 18 helicopters and approximately 830 personnel.

While the hull was acquired at no cost, the program faces scrutiny regarding the high expenses of refurbishing and operating an aging vessel. The Indonesian Finance Ministry has reportedly approved approximately $450 million in financing for the program in 2025. To address operational efficiency and fuel costs associated with its current COGAG gas turbine propulsion system, PT PAL is exploring technical modifications, such as converting the system to diesel.
