Indonesia refines National Agrarian Reform Agency roles
The Indonesian government is refining the institutional structure of the National Agrarian Reform Agency (BRAN) to clarify its roles and authorities. During a meeting at the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform, officials discussed organizational arrangements to prevent overlapping duties between BRAN and the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning (ATR/BPN).
BRAN is tasked with resolving legal deadlocks in agrarian conflicts. Its responsibilities include planning, creating agrarian reform roadmaps, designating priority locations, and verifying objects and subjects related to land disputes.
Following the passage of the Agrarian Reform Regulation Law on September 22, 2026, experts emphasize that successful reform must go beyond land redistribution. The policy is viewed as a tool for national economic transformation that should foster productivity, ensure legal certainty for investments, and reduce conflicts regarding land use rights and forest areas.
