Indonesia cancels Israel Houghton concert and rejects visa
The Indonesian government has canceled a planned concert by American gospel singer Israel Houghton and his group, Israel & New Breed, scheduled for October 24, 2026, in Jakarta. Authorities have also confirmed they will reject any future visa applications from the musician.
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated the decision was based on national security concerns and Indonesia’s commitment to the Palestinian cause. The government cited Houghton’s 2023 public statement, ‘I stand with Israel,’ as a factor in the decision, fearing the event could be used for political propaganda that contradicts Indonesia’s foreign policy.
Directorate General of Immigration chief Hendarsam Marantoko emphasized that visa issuance is a sovereign right based on selective policy. He noted that Houghton has been placed on a ‘subject of interest’ list for immigration monitoring to maintain social harmony and national interest. The decision has received support from organizations such as PB Mathla’ul Anwar, which praised the government's firm stance on protecting national interests and foreign policy consistency.
