Indonesia removes 5 million child accounts under new digital protection rule

Indonesia has blocked or deleted roughly five million accounts belonging to users under 16 on various digital platforms, implementing Government Regulation PP Tunas on electronic system governance for child protection. The effort was announced by Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid, who said the risk‑based approach differs from Australia’s total age ban and has already outperformed TikTok’s account reductions in Australia.

Platforms such as Roblox have disabled chat features for Indonesian users under 16, requiring parental consent to reactivate them. The ministry highlighted challenges in age‑verification technology, noting many companies have yet to adopt advanced methods like facial recognition or behavioral analysis. The removal is presented as a significant step toward safer online environments for children in Indonesia.
