Indonesia reports 620 children exposed to digital extremism

The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) of Indonesia has recorded that 620 children, aged 11 to 18, were exposed to extremist ideologies and violence through digital spaces between January and August 2026.

Authorities from Densus 88 Antiteror Polri noted that these minors are actively engaging with extreme ideologies. Findings include the use of extremist attributes, a preference for violent behavior, and the consumption of manifestos and doctrines. This exposure is often facilitated by digital algorithms that recommend harmful content to users based on their curiosity.

Experts highlight a shift in radicalization patterns from conventional door-to-door recruitment to digital methods, including social media and online gaming communities. This shift makes children and teenagers particularly vulnerable. To combat this, the BNPT is working with the Terrorism Prevention Coordination Forum (FKPT) to promote digital literacy and equip the younger generation with the tools to recognize and resist radical content.
