Indonesia reports billions lost to online scams and launches e‑commerce seller tax system

Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK) said that as of 14 January 2026, more than 432,000 consumer complaints had been recorded, involving roughly Rp 9.1 trillion lost to various online scams. The regulator blocked over 397,000 accounts and recovered about Rp 432 billion, but still faces a surge of around 1,000 new reports per day and rapid movement of stolen funds across banks, e‑wallets, crypto and digital assets.

Separately, the Directorate General of Taxes announced that four major e‑commerce platforms – Tokopedia, Shopee, Lazada and Blibli – will act as withholding‑tax collectors for domestic sellers. Effective 1 August 2026, the platforms will automatically deduct 0.5 % of sellers' gross revenues as PPh Pasal 22, issue electronic tax invoices and remit the tax to the state treasury, simplifying compliance for online merchants.
