Indonesia reports fatalities in ferry sinking and train collision
Indonesia is addressing two major transportation accidents involving significant loss of life.
In the Java Sea, the death toll from the sinking of the ferry ‘Virgo Transport 8’ has reached 71 people as of September 28. The vessel, which was traveling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, capsized and sank on September 13 during severe weather. Of the 243 people on board, 108 have been rescued. Search and recovery efforts are currently hindered by unstable wreckage, sharp metal debris, and fuel leaks within the vessel. Authorities are working with international and local firms to stabilize and raise the ship from a depth of approximately 30 meters.
Separately, the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) released findings regarding a fatal train collision in Bekasi, West Java, that occurred on April 27. The investigation concluded that the collision between a commuter train and a long-distance train, which killed 16 people and injured 107, was caused by a combination of signaling failures and communication breakdowns. The report noted that the long-distance train driver was not alerted to a red signal due to equipment malfunctions, and critical information regarding a prior accident involving the commuter train took over three minutes to reach the control center. The KNKT also cited inadequate driver training and poor visibility as contributing factors.
