Indonesia reports surge in Influenza A cases

Indonesia is experiencing a significant rise in Influenza A cases, with the Ministry of Health reporting a high positivity rate for Influenza-Like Illness (ILI). As of late September 2026, surveillance data shows a positivity rate of approximately 58.59%. The dominant strain identified is Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, though Influenza A(H3N2) subclade K—often colloquially referred to as ‘super flu’—has also been detected across 20 provinces.

Children, particularly those in the 0–9 age group, are among the most vulnerable populations. In several regions, including Kuningan and Jember, the surge in respiratory infections has led to increased hospitalizations and crowded emergency rooms. Medical experts suggest that poor air quality and environmental factors may be exacerbating respiratory vulnerabilities.

In response to the trend, the Ministry of Health has advised against the panic buying of antiviral medications like oseltamivir, emphasizing that such drugs should only be administered under medical supervision. Local authorities in cities like Bandung and Tangerang have issued advisories to strengthen early detection in schools and healthcare facilities, urging the public to maintain hygiene practices and monitor for severe symptoms such as high fever and lethargy.
