Indonesia reports rise in influenza cases

Indonesia is experiencing an increase in influenza cases, with reports of Influenza A (H3N2) Subclade K detected in 13 provinces. This variant, colloquially referred to as a ‘super flu’ due to its aggressive replication and transmissibility, has led to a rise in emergency room visits, particularly in West Java. Symptoms include sudden high fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and extreme fatigue, with risks of complications such as pneumonia.

According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the rise in cases observed in late September 2026 follows common seasonal patterns and does not currently indicate an extraordinary outbreak or emergency. Surveillance data from week 38 of 2026 showed a 56 percent positivity rate among 265 tested specimens. While H3N2 Subclade K is noted, Influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 has also been identified as a dominant subtype in the region, mirroring global trends. Health authorities maintain that influenza activity in primary care is at a moderate level, while hospital-based surveillance remains low.
