Indonesia intensifies crackdown on companies linked to forest fires
Indonesia is intensifying its response to widespread forest and land fires across Sumatra and Kalimantan. The Ministry of Environment has sealed 21 business entities across seven provinces, including West Kalimantan, South Sumatra, and Riau, due to their suspected links to the fires. Additionally, the government has frozen the business permits of five companies in West Kalimantan, specifically targeting PT Mahkota Rimba Utama, PT Hutan Ketapang Lestari, PT Mayawana Persada, PT Duta Andalan Sukses, and PT Wana Lestari Jaya.
Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni noted that September represents the peak period for these fires. To bolster firefighting efforts, the Ministry of Transportation has authorized 35 foreign aircraft, primarily helicopters from countries including the US, Russia, and Australia, to assist in aerial water bombing operations. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is also providing financial support to ground task force personnel.
Beyond corporate sanctions, the fires pose significant ecological threats, impacting biodiversity and causing transboundary haze that affects neighboring Malaysia. Authorities are currently investigating three additional companies in Jambi Province for alleged legal violations related to the ongoing wildfires.
