Indonesia seeks diverse funding to bridge health transformation gap

Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin is seeking to secure diverse funding sources to support the nation’s health transformation and tuberculosis (TB) elimination efforts. During the 4th Indonesia Health Partners Meeting, the Minister noted a funding gap of approximately US$36 to US$37 billion required to meet the strategic five-year health plan, which has an estimated total requirement of US$233 billion against US$177 billion currently available.

To address these needs, the government is looking beyond the state budget (APBN) to include contributions from BPJS Kesehatan, the private sector, grants, and loans. Specifically regarding TB, the Minister committed to strengthening handling through additional grant funding to offset concerns regarding a projected decrease in medical equipment budgets for 2027. This follows inquiries from Commission IX of the House of Representatives regarding the sustainability of TB funding, given Indonesia’s high disease burden and its ranking as second in the world for TB cases.
